Independent Advisory Group: Coronavirus powers

On 9 April 2020, it was announced that an Independent Advisory Group (IAG) would be set up to review Police Scotland’s use of new temporary police powers to tackle coronavirus.

The Group is chaired by John Scott QC and has reported directly to the Scottish Police Authority, as the governance and oversight body for Police Scotland. Urgent actions identified as part of the Group’s considerations have been discharged as necessary.

The Group, which for 3 months met twice weekly, currently meets once a week, via videoconference. John Scott QC provides updates at SPA Authority meetings which are available to view live or recorded on Livestream:

The Group’s next formal report will be presented in public at the Authority meeting on 19 August. As a member of the Group, SWAN ODL, Catriona, delivered an early briefing document to go to Police Scotland on behalf of the autistic community. She ran an online survey of autistic experiences of the COVID-19 emergency legislation and guidelines which included questions on autistic people’s lived experiences and human rights. The briefing document and outcome from that survey and the accompanying report is available to download below as pdf documents:
