Some tips for people supporting autistic women and girls to attend healthcare appointments, based on information gathered at our event ‘Health and Wellbeing for Women and Girls on the Autism Spectrum’:

Be prepared for the appointment and support the person you are going with to prepare

  • Make a list together of questions/key points to bring up
  • Talk through any concerns
  • Make sure they have all the information they need about the appointment (e.g. time, location, anything they need to do or bring in advance), and support them to find it if not

Support understanding

  • Of the role of the practitioner you are seeing and the purpose of the appointment
  • Of the content of the appointment – take notes so you can go over them together afterwards
  • Of any follow up actions
  • Use visual aids, social stories, timetables or other tools if appropriate

Be reassuring and positive

Provide support and encouragement for them to answer questions, don’t answer on their behalf where possible

If appropriate, explain the needs of the person you are supporting to the healthcare practitioner
