Recruiting: SWAN Freelance Sensory Map Artist Cover image

We are looking for creative and detail-oriented artists to create sensory maps that help autistic women, non-binary people, and girls in Scotland access clear, practical information about places and environments. Sensory maps are commissioned on a per-project basis, and artists will be paid for each completed map in line with the agreed project fee.

Role Title: Freelance Sensory Map Artist

Responsible to: Wellbeing Walk Coordinator

How much time do I need to commit?

As an independent contractor you will set your own working plan. This role is not considered employment at SWAN but instead freelance work. You will be commissioned to produce one sensory map.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for an artist to create sensory maps for our Wellbeing Walking groups. Our wellbeing walks are based in various locations around Scotland you can find out more about them here - https://swanscotland.org/servi...

You will be creating maps based on information from our volunteer Walk Leaders to be shared with potential attendees. Sensory maps will be shared with attendees both digitally and through physical printed copies and other organisations that support individuals who would benefit from the use of a sensory walking map for autistic individuals. These maps help our autistic attendees better understand the areas where we hold our groups. We want our attendees to feel comfortable and confident when attending our groups, so the goal of the sensory map is to include information about the location for people to review before attending a walk.

What is a sensory map?

A sensory map is used to give walkers an idea of what they can expect on a walking route. It can highlight points of interest for attendees to look out for, specific nature elements they may experience on the walk and can help orient people to surrounding landmarks.

We will share with you key criteria for it to include like the route name, a map legend, terrain, the walking area and route, etc

If you would like us to send you some examples of previous work then please do reach out - walk@swanscotland.org

Who are we looking for?

  • Lived experience as an autistic woman, trans individual or non-binary person (diagnosed or self-diagnosed)
  • Reliable and organised
  • Prior experience creating artwork or digital maps is preferred

Is this a paid position? Yes, you would receive £340 per each map created. Payment is per map created and not paid by the hour.

Deadline:
We are currently aiming for the map to be completed by September, in line with the end of our current funding period.
